Arbeloa's Redemption Tale: The Remarkable Rise of Álvaro Leiva at Real Madrid

How a summer signing went from being banished to the C team to earning a first-team call-up under Álvaro Arbeloa at Real Madrid in just a few months.

A tale of redemption that would make even the most hardened football romantic raise an eyebrow or two. Álvaro Leiva has gone from being discarded, banished to the wilderness, and then remarkably recalled to earn a first-team call-up against Levante.

From Hero to Zero… and Back Again

If you’re scratching your head wondering who Leiva is on the Castilla roster, save yourself the bother - he’s technically registered with Real Madrid C. This summer signing (or rather, returning loanee from Algeciras) was meant to be one of Arbeloa’s star reinforcements for the Castilla side, alongside Rachad Fettal.

But blimey, things went Pete Tong almost immediately:

  • Leiva failed to impress Arbeloa in pre-season training
  • A rib injury after the Marbella camp in late July compounded his problems
  • He didn’t feature in any of Castilla’s six pre-season friendlies
  • By August, despite having just returned and signed a contract until 2027, the club was shopping him around

The Wilderness Years (Well, Months)

When no transfer materialized, Arbeloa made a brutal decision - Leiva was effectively demoted to Real Madrid C, the club’s second reserve team. Not just training with them, but officially registered there. For a player who arrived with the expectation of being a difference-maker for Castilla, it was a proper kick in the teeth.

From there, Leiva had to rebuild his career from scratch. He focused on regaining fitness and put in the graft with Madrid C, making six appearances and slowly working his way back into Arbeloa’s good books.

The Comeback Trail

The first sign of thawing relations came in late October when Arbeloa included him in the squad for a Premier League International Cup match against Southampton. From there, Leiva’s stock steadily rose until he earned a start against Cacereño in November.

That match proved the turning point - Leiva delivered a stellar performance showcasing all the attacking qualities that had made him such an exciting prospect in the first place: pace, dribbling ability, and directness.

From C-Team to A-Team

Now, in the most remarkable twist of this saga, Leiva finds himself called up to the first team for the Levante match. It’s the final chapter (so far) in what must rank as one of the most dramatic career resurrections in La Fábrica’s recent history.

For Arbeloa, it’s vindication of his tough-love approach. The former defender clearly has an eye for talent but demands absolute commitment. After a rocky start to their relationship, both manager and player have come full circle in spectacular fashion.
