Castellón snap up young defender Ismael Fadel in winter window move

CD Castellón have made their first winter signing, bringing in 21-year-old Spanish-Moroccan defender Ismael Fadel from Segunda RFEF side Yeclano.

Spanish second-tier side Castellón have wasted no time dipping into the January sales, securing their first winter window signing with promising young defender Ismael Fadel joining from Segunda RFEF outfit Yeclano.

The Deal

The 21-year-old Spanish-Moroccan centre-back arrives at Castellón on a permanent deal but will initially join up with the club’s B team. Though he’s starting in the reserves, the club clearly sees him as one for the future, with a pathway to the first team seemingly mapped out already.

Fadel brings versatility to the table, capable of operating both in central defence and as a defensive midfielder when needed - the sort of flexibility managers love in their squad players.

Background and Experience

Despite his tender age, Fadel already has a decent bit of experience under his belt:

  • Came through Real Zaragoza’s youth system
  • Spent 2023-24 season on loan at Ejea, helping them secure promotion to Segunda RFEF
  • Stayed with Ejea the following season, making 26 appearances in Segunda RFEF
  • Joined Yeclano last summer where he’s been a regular starter
  • Made 17 appearances for Yeclano this season, with the club currently sitting just one point outside the promotion playoff spots

Club Statement

Castellón seem proper chuffed with their new addition, noting in their official statement that they’ve “incorporated a young footballer with hunger and potential to strengthen the defence.”

What It Means

While not the sort of Adam and Eve (believe) signing that’ll have fans rushing to buy season tickets, this looks like a smart bit of business for Castellón. They’re bringing in a young defender with room to grow who won’t cost them a king’s ransom in wages.

The Segunda División side are clearly planning for the future while ensuring they have depth in their squad as they navigate the second half of the season.
