Córdoba's million euro payday as Carlos Isaac heads to Poland

Córdoba CF set to lose key defender Carlos Isaac to Polish side Widzew Lodz, but the €1 million release clause represents excellent business for the Segunda División club.

Córdoba CF are about to lose one of their regular starters, but their bank balance will be looking rather healthy as Polish side Widzew Lodz prepare to trigger Carlos Isaac’s €1 million release clause.

Polish revolution claims Spanish defender

The right-back is finalizing details of his departure from Córdoba to join Widzew Lodz in Poland’s top-flight Ekstraklasa. The Polish outfit, currently 15th in the table, are in the midst of a squad overhaul as they battle to escape the relegation zone.

Widzew initially approached the player a couple of weeks back, and despite Isaac’s contract expiring this summer, they were keen to secure his services immediately. Their opening offer of around €200,000 was rebuffed by Córdoba, who stood firm even when the Poles tripled their bid following Isaac’s match-winning goal against Huesca - what now appears to be his final contribution for the club.

With Córdoba refusing to negotiate below the release clause, Widzew have been forced to stump up the full million. The defender was notably absent from Friday’s training session, which the club unusually declared completely closed to media, without even the customary 15-minute open period. Instead, Isaac was reportedly undergoing medical examinations at a local clinic.

Lucrative Polish payday

Sources close to the negotiations suggest the Navalmoral de la Mata native is set to pocket a tidy sum with a contract running until 2028, with an option for an additional year. That’s not bad business for a player who joined Córdoba on a free transfer in summer 2022.

During his time with Los Blanquiverdes, Isaac made 46 appearances and particularly impressed during the second half of last season.

Córdoba left short at the back

The club is already working to secure a replacement, but they’ll be proper short at the back for their upcoming clash with Málaga, with only three fit defenders available:

  • Albarrán
  • Álex Martín
  • Xavi Sintes

It remains to be seen whether Vilarrasa, returning from a pubic injury, will be available or if they’ll need to call up academy product Marcelo to fill the gap.

A million quid for a player who arrived on a free and was months away from walking? That’s what I call a right result for Córdoba’s coffers.
