FFF secretly plotting Zidane takeover after 2026 World Cup
The French Football Federation is already working behind the scenes to bring Zinedine Zidane in as national team manager after Didier Deschamps departs post-World Cup.
The French Football Federation has reportedly begun secret talks with Zinedine Zidane to take over as national team manager after the 2026 World Cup in the United States, despite publicly maintaining focus on the tournament ahead.
Worst-kept secret in French football
It’s been the talk of the terraces for months now - Zizou taking the reins of Les Bleus once Didier Deschamps’ contract expires after the World Cup. According to L’Équipe, what’s new is that the FFF has already started working “in secret” with the Real Madrid legend to hammer out the details of his arrival.
The French sports daily reports that while nothing has been signed yet, the federation appears to have made its decision to appoint the 1998 World Cup winner as the next France manager. Proper job, that.
Behind closed doors
While the FFF wants all attention on France’s quest for a third World Cup trophy, the powers that be apparently can’t afford to sit on their hands regarding succession planning. Both parties contacted by L’Équipe have kept schtum about the talks, but it’s understood that:
- Discussions have already begun about Zidane’s potential coaching staff
- The interest is mutual between Zidane and the federation
- The planning is happening discreetly to avoid distractions
Official position
FFF President Philippe Diallo has been playing it cool in public. Back in November, he expressed his “great admiration and respect” for Zidane’s contributions as both player and coach, while carefully avoiding any confirmation.
“We’ll see what happens,” Diallo had said, keeping his cards close to his chest. “Now, we’re focusing on preparing for the World Cup.”
For Zidane, who’s been on gardening leave since leaving the Bernabeu for the second time, the France job has long been his dream gig. After turning down multiple club offers over the years, including Manchester United, it seems the stars are finally aligning for the three-time Champions League-winning manager.
