Matarazzo ends Real Sociedad keeper debate: Remiro remains number one despite Marrero heroics
Real Sociedad manager makes it crystal clear that despite Unai Marrero's penalty-saving heroics against Osasuna, Álex Remiro will continue as first-choice goalkeeper in La Liga.
Real Sociedad manager Pellegrino Matarazzo has swiftly put to bed any brewing goalkeeper controversy at the Basque club following Unai Marrero’s showstopping performance against Osasuna.
Remiro remains top dog
It took the gaffer all of 30 seconds to make his position crystal clear during Friday’s press conference. Despite Marrero’s heroics between the sticks - including two saved penalties against Osasuna - there’s no changing of the guard at Anoeta.
“Estoy encantado con Unai,” Matarazzo acknowledged, but promptly confirmed Remiro will keep his place as La Real’s number one for La Liga matches.
The manager’s swift intervention shows he’s not about to let any unnecessary drama develop in the dressing room. Smart move, that. Nothing worse than keeper uncertainty to send shivers through a defence.
Different strengths
Matarazzo was keen to highlight the different attributes both stoppers bring to the table:
- Marrero: Praised for his emotional character and spectacular saves
- Remiro: Valued not just for shot-stopping but particularly for his distribution skills
This suggests Matarazzo has specific roles in mind for each keeper, with Remiro’s ball-playing abilities giving him the edge for league fixtures where building from the back is crucial to La Real’s style.
Odriozola earns praise
It wasn’t just goalkeeper chat at the presser. The boss also dished out some kind words for Álvaro Odriozola, who put in a proper shift against Osasuna after months warming the bench.
“Tuvo unos minutos fantásticos,” said Matarazzo, clearly chuffed with the former Real Madrid man’s intensity. The manager hinted that solid performances won’t go unrewarded, suggesting Odriozola might see more action in the coming fixtures.
For La Real fans, it’s Adam and Eve (believe) that competition for places is heating up across the park. With European football still on the menu, having quality options like Marrero and Odriozola pushing the first-teamers can only be a positive for the remainder of the campaign.
