Ter Stegen's Barcelona nightmare: German keeper faces Flick's final warning

Barcelona's number one Marc-André ter Stegen looks set for Girona loan move as Joan García cements starting position under Hansi Flick

Barcelona’s German goalkeeper faces a stark reality as Hansi Flick makes his preferences crystal clear, with a January exit now looking inevitable.

Joan García: The New Number One

The writing was on the wall when Joan García started between the sticks for Barcelona’s Copa del Rey clash against Racing Santander at El Sardinero. Flick isn’t pulling the wool over anyone’s mince pies - he’s been straight about the former Espanyol keeper being his first choice, and nothing’s changed.

García even justified his selection with a crucial save in the dying moments, denying Racing a one-on-one opportunity that could have forced extra time. The young keeper has well and truly cemented his position as Barça’s undisputed number one.

World Cup Worries

Ter Stegen might have hoped to at least feature in cup competitions after starting against Guadalajara in the previous round. However, that appearance seems to have been more about proving his fitness following injury rather than establishing him as the cup goalkeeper.

The German national team is applying pressure too. Rudi Völler, sporting director for Die Mannschaft, has been crystal clear: if Ter Stegen wants to feature in next summer’s World Cup, he needs regular playing time - something his competitors for the national team jersey are getting.

Girona Loan Beckons

Barring a major surprise, Ter Stegen will be packing his bags - though he won’t be traveling far. Girona have expressed interest and have already approached Barcelona to explore a loan arrangement. The Catalan neighbors can’t afford Ter Stegen’s hefty wages, reported to be around €17 million.

Barcelona’s sporting director Deco has already discussed the matter with Quique Cárcel from Girona. The Blaugrana understand they’ll need to subsidize most of the goalkeeper’s salary, but they’re prepared to do so, having promised Ter Stegen a solution and seeing some financial benefit in offloading at least a portion of his wages.

Timing Issues

The question remains how long Ter Stegen will stay at Barcelona before making the move. He may wait until the transfer window closes as insurance against potential injuries to García or Wojciech Szczęsny. The club would prefer this approach, as a premature departure followed by a potential return would be awkward for all parties.
