Wolves stand firm on Joao Gomes amid Atlético Madrid interest
Rob Edwards insists Wolves are under no pressure to sell Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes despite growing interest from Atlético Madrid and Manchester United.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are digging their heels in over Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes, with gaffer Rob Edwards making it crystal clear they won’t be pushed into a sale despite interest from Spanish giants Atlético Madrid.
No fire sale at Molineux
The Wolves boss addressed the speculation surrounding Gomes and teammate Emmanuel Agbadou in his Friday presser, shutting down any notion that the club is desperate to cash in this January.
“We have very good players, so it’s normal there are rumours,” Edwards explained, adding that the club faces “no pressure to sell” either player at present.
This stance will come as a bit of a blow to Atlético Madrid, who’ve been eyeing up the 24-year-old Brazilian to strengthen their midfield options. The Spanish side have just pocketed a tidy sum from Conor Gallagher’s move to Tottenham Hotspur – reportedly around €40 million – and are keen to reinvest in their squad.
Gomes attracting serious attention
It’s not just Atleti showing interest in the Brazilian midfielder. Manchester United have also been linked with Gomes as they look to bolster their engine room options.
The interest is hardly surprising given Gomes’ development since arriving at Molineux:
- Now in his fourth season with Wolves
- Established himself as a key performer in midfield
- Combines defensive solidity with progressive passing
- Still only 24 with significant room for growth
Wolves holding the cards
The Black Country outfit appear to be in a strong negotiating position, with Edwards making it clear any deal would need to be “right for the club” – code for ‘pay up or do one’ in transfer speak.
For Atlético, this stance presents a challenge. Despite having cash in the old sky rocket from the Gallagher deal, they may need to table a substantial offer to tempt Wolves into business during the mid-season window.
As things stand, it seems Gomes will remain at Molineux unless someone comes in with an offer that’s simply too good to turn down.
