Bernabéu turns toxic as fans unleash fury on Madrid stars
Real Madrid faithful show their discontent after recent failures with whistles for Vinicius and Bellingham, while some even call for Florentino's resignation.
The Santiago Bernabéu showed its teeth today as Real Madrid faced Levante, with the European champions greeted by a chorus of whistles and jeers following their recent disappointments.
Toxic atmosphere greets struggling Madrid
It was never going to be a walk in the park for Los Blancos after their recent wobbles. The Copa del Rey exit and Supercopa final defeat to Barcelona have clearly pushed the notoriously demanding Madrid faithful over the edge. When the players emerged onto the pitch, they were met with a proper earful from significant sections of the stadium.
Even the club anthem blasting through the speakers couldn’t completely drown out the discontent. Some fans were waving white handkerchiefs – the traditional Spanish gesture of disapproval – while others directed their anger at the usually supportive ‘animation section’ who tried to rally behind the team.
Warning signs from arrival
The writing was on the wall from the moment the team coach pulled up at the stadium. Although the crowd wasn’t massive, those present made their feelings crystal clear with whistles rather than the usual cheers as the bus arrived.
The pre-match warm-up brought another wave of discontent, though the stadium was still filling up. A brief scare for Mbappé, who needed treatment after taking a knock but was able to continue, did little to improve the atmosphere.
Vini and Bellingham in the firing line
When the stadium announcer read out the team sheet, two players in particular copped the brunt of fan frustration: Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr. The pair, normally darlings of the Bernabéu crowd, were singled out with especially fierce whistles.
In stark contrast, academy product Gonzalo received warm applause when his name was announced – a telling indication of where fan sympathies currently lie.
Florentino not spared
As the match got underway, things didn’t improve. The whistles continued whenever certain players touched the ball, with Vini and Bellingham again receiving the harshest treatment.
Perhaps most shocking were the chants directed at club president Florentino Pérez, with some sections of the crowd calling for his resignation. “Florentino, dimisión!” echoed around parts of the stadium – a rare sound in a venue where the president typically enjoys strong support.
This isn’t just your average bit of fan disappointment – it’s the sort of atmosphere that could have serious ramifications if results don’t improve sharpish.
