Bernabéu's Faithful Split: Inside the 'Grada Fans' Reaction to Madrid's Crisis

How the Santiago Bernabéu's most loyal supporters responded during a hostile atmosphere following Real Madrid's Saudi Super Cup and Copa del Rey disasters.

The atmosphere at the Bernabéu was proper naughty after those back-to-back cup disasters, but not everyone was giving the players grief. While most of the stadium was out for blood, the ‘Grada Fans’ in the South Stand took a different approach.

A House Divided

After getting knocked out by bloody Albacete in the Copa and losing in Saudi Arabia, the writing was on the wall for a proper Bernabéu welcome – you know, the kind that makes millionaire footballers wish they’d called in sick. But while most of the ground was ready to give the players a right earful, the usually raucous South Stand had other ideas.

The ‘Grada Fans’ section, Madrid’s most organised supporters, found themselves in a right pickle. Would they join the chorus of disapproval or back the lads regardless? In the end, they chose loyalty over rebellion.

White Shirts and Whispered Warnings

Some telling comments were overheard near the section: “Mate, put on your white shirt, they’re watching us” and “They don’t want us being filmed.” The message was crystal clear – the ultras were keeping it together, showing solidarity in pristine white shirts and applauding the team throughout.

Meanwhile, the rest of the stadium had their knives out, creating an atmosphere that would make even the hardest players go weak at the knees. The contrast couldn’t have been starker – vicious whistles from the posh seats, determined support from the South Stand.

Calculated Response

The ‘Grada Fans’ approach was methodical:

  • Applaud during the warm-up while others jeered
  • Support the starting lineup announcement when others whistled
  • Maintain their usual chants despite the toxic atmosphere
  • Stay silent rather than join in with criticism of certain players

There was even a curious moment late on when the South Stand began chanting “Arbeloa, Arbe, Arbe…” – only to be drowned out by whistles from elsewhere in the stadium.

Interestingly, Arbeloa himself later distinguished between the whistles aimed at players (which he attributed to the Bernabéu’s demanding nature) and those directed at President Florentino Perez (which he claimed came from “people who don’t love Real Madrid”). What’s certain is neither came from the South Stand, where the ‘Grada Fans’ stood firm in their support.
