Cancelo's Barça comeback: Portuguese defender returns to action in Anoeta
João Cancelo made his second Barcelona debut against Real Sociedad, entering as a substitute in the second half after rejoining on loan from Al-Hilal.
After a brief spell away, João Cancelo has finally stepped back onto the pitch for Barcelona, making his second debut for the Catalan giants in their La Liga clash against Real Sociedad at Anoeta.
Back in Blaugrana
The 31-year-old Portuguese defender, Barcelona’s sole winter transfer window acquisition, entered the fray in the 63rd minute against La Real, replacing Alejandro Balde on the left side of defence. This marks Cancelo’s official return to action in the famous azulgrana shirt since his previous appearance on May 26, 2024, when Barça faced Sevilla.
Cancelo has rejoined the club on loan from Saudi side Al-Hilal until the end of the season, giving Hansi Flick some much-needed defensive reinforcement following Andreas Christensen’s long-term injury setback.
Second time lucky
Interestingly, this wasn’t Cancelo’s first appearance in the matchday squad since his return. The Portuguese international was named on the bench for Barcelona’s Copa del Rey round of 16 clash against Racing Santander at El Sardinero, though he remained an unused substitute on that occasion.
His proper second coming had to wait until tonight’s La Liga encounter in San Sebastián, where Flick finally unleashed him back into Spanish football.
Experienced campaigner
Cancelo’s previous stint with Barcelona in the 2023-24 season was quite productive, with the defender featuring in 42 matches across all competitions. His versatility and experience make him a valuable addition to Flick’s squad as they continue their campaign on multiple fronts.
For Barcelona supporters, particularly those who’ve been worried about the team’s defensive depth, seeing Cancelo back in action will be a proper Bobby Dazzler. The Portuguese brings quality and tactical flexibility that could prove crucial as the business end of the season approaches.
