Celta's European Dream Faces Íñigo Pérez Hurdle as Giráldez Seeks First Win Over Rayo Boss

Celta Vigo aim for third straight home win and European push, while Íñigo Pérez's Rayo Vallecano look to build on recent victory despite injury woes.

Claudio Giráldez’s Celta Vigo are riding a wave of good form, with European football firmly in their sights. But today’s clash against Rayo Vallecano presents a personal challenge for the manager who’s yet to defeat Íñigo Pérez’s side since their first meeting last March.

Celta’s European Push

The Galicians are absolutely flying at the moment. After sorting out their home form troubles that plagued them before the Christmas break, they’ve put together back-to-back wins at Balaídos. A third consecutive home victory today would keep them firmly in the hunt for European spots - not bad for a club that was in a proper relegation dogfight last term.

There’s been some movement in the squad, with Fran Beltrán missing from the matchday squad against his former employers as he finalizes a move to Girona, ending a seven-and-a-half-year spell with the club. Bit of a shame that, as he’s been a proper servant for Celta. Jutglà is also absent for the second consecutive match due to personal reasons, while youth product Hugo Burcio earns a call-up to the first team.

Rayo’s Mixed Bag

The visitors from Madrid are now fully focused on LaLiga for the next couple of months following their cup exit and with no Conference League fixtures until March. Their recent 2-0 victory against Mallorca was a welcome result, breaking an eight-match winless run and seeing them score multiple goals in a league game for the first time since mid-October.

Injuries have absolutely done a number on Rayo, with eight players currently sidelined. The absences have hit particularly hard at right-back and in midfield, forcing Íñigo to get creative with his selection. All signs point to left-back Pacha Espino being shifted across to fill in on the right side of defence - not ideal, but needs must when you’re down to the bare bones.

Battle of the Spanish Hopefuls

Keep your mince pies on the fascinating duel between two players with World Cup ambitions:

  • Borja Iglesias continues his goalscoring form for Celta with seven goals and two assists in LaLiga this season. The striker they call ‘Panda’ has maintained his scoring touch while helping Celta compete across three competitions.

  • Jorge de Frutos has been linked with Premier League clubs this week after his impressive displays. The attacking midfielder has notched six goals and one assist, continuing to show his best form for Rayo.

Both players will be hoping to catch Luis de la Fuente’s eye as the Spain manager considers his options for the upcoming World Cup.
