Coudet on the chopping block as Alavés sink into relegation zone

The Vitoria side's alarming form continues with just 4 points from 27, putting manager Eduardo Coudet under serious pressure ahead of crucial Betis clash.

Despite showing fight until the final whistle at the Metropolitano, Alavés have slipped into the drop zone for the first time this season, heaping pressure on manager Eduardo Coudet as dark clouds gather over Mendizorroza.

Form from hell

The Basque outfit’s current run is nothing short of disastrous – they’ve managed to scrape together just 4 points from a possible 27. That’s relegation form any way you slice it, and the table doesn’t lie anymore.

Their defeat to Atlético Madrid was perhaps expected, but it keeps them firmly in the bottom three after Mallorca and Valencia both picked up crucial victories. For a team that had comfortably established themselves in mid-table during the opening months of the season, it’s a proper nightmare scenario.

Schedule nightmares

The fixture list hasn’t done Coudet any favours recently:

  • Back-to-back away trips to Villarreal and Atlético Madrid
  • Zero points collected from these difficult fixtures
  • Those two dropped points against Oviedo in their first match of 2026 now look absolutely massive

Coudet on the brink

While being in a relegation scrap shouldn’t be a total shock for a club whose primary objective was simply survival, the manner of their collapse is raising serious questions about the Argentine manager’s future.

The club from Vitoria aren’t exactly known for their patience with managers. Coudet – or ‘Chacho’ as he’s known – finds himself walking a tightrope with the board, despite facing numerous obstacles including a squad that could desperately use reinforcement in several positions.

D-Day against Betis

Next Sunday’s home clash against Real Betis has all the makings of a cup final for both Alavés and Coudet personally. Win, and they might just kickstart their escape from the drop zone. Lose, and the gaffer could be on his bike before Monday morning.

The pressure’s well and truly on at Mendizorroza – time for Coudet to show he’s got the minerals to turn this ship around.
