Sevilla hit by fresh injury woes ahead of Elche clash

Alexis Sánchez and Januzaj join growing absentee list as Almeyda's struggling side seek to end four-match losing streak in Sunday's La Liga encounter.

Sevilla’s injury troubles continue to mount as they prepare for a crucial away trip to Elche, with Alexis Sánchez and Adnan Januzaj becoming the latest casualties in Matías Almeyda’s depleted squad.

Squad situation

The Argentine manager has named a 22-man squad for Sunday’s fixture at the Martínez Valero, where Sevilla desperately need a result to halt their alarming slide. The Nervionenses are currently on a proper mare of a run, having lost their last three league matches and suffered a cup exit to boot, making it four defeats on the spin. Even more concerning for the Andalusians is their complete inability to find the back of the onion bag during this barren spell.

Januzaj’s absence is due to discomfort in his right hamstring, with the Belgian awaiting further assessment including an MRI scan to determine the severity. Meanwhile, Alexis Sánchez joins Rubén Vargas on the sidelines after both picked up knocks in the recent defeat to Celta Vigo.

The injury list doesn’t end there, with César Azpilicueta and Alfon continuing their rehabilitation processes, while Marcao is suspended for the fixture.

Returning faces

It’s not all doom and gloom for the Sevilla faithful, though. There are some welcome returns to the squad:

  • Nigerian internationals Akor Adams and Ejuke are back following their Bronze medal triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations, having defeated Egypt on penalties yesterday before flying back to Seville this afternoon
  • Gabriel Suazo makes his comeback after recovering from the injury he sustained against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu in the final match of 2025

Almeyda acknowledged the boost of having his AFCON stars available again, stating this morning that while he’s unsure if they’ll start, their presence gives him attacking options “that we haven’t had in other matches.”

With the second half of the league campaign now underway, Sevilla will be desperate to turn their fortunes around, starting with this tricky away fixture against an Elche side that will fancy their chances against the struggling visitors.
