Sevilla receive timely boost as Akor and Ejuke return from AFCON duty

Nigerian duo Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke have rejoined Sevilla after winning bronze at AFCON, providing a much-needed offensive boost for struggling Almeyda.

Sevilla’s attacking options have received a significant boost as Nigerian internationals Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke returned to Spain following their bronze medal triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Bronze medalists back in the fold

The Nigerian pair arrived in Seville this morning after helping their country secure third place in the AFCON tournament with a penalty shootout victory over Egypt. Their return couldn’t be more timely for manager Matías Almeyda, whose side is currently experiencing a proper mare, having lost three consecutive LaLiga matches and suffering elimination from the Copa del Rey.

Despite FIFA’s recommendation of a 72-hour rest period following international duty, neither the players nor the Nigerian federation have raised any objections to their immediate availability. This means both could feature in tomorrow’s fixture against Elche at the Martínez Valero (21:00 local time).

Attacking reinforcements desperately needed

Sevilla’s recent goalscoring drought makes the return of these attacking talents particularly valuable. The team has failed to find the back of the onion bag in their last four matches, coinciding with their losing streak.

Akor Adams has been in fine fettle during the tournament, contributing two goals and two assists for Nigeria. His striking partner Ejuke has also shown good form on the international stage.

Their importance is magnified by Sevilla’s current injury crisis in attack:

  • Alfon and Rubén Vargas are sidelined with injuries
  • Alexis Sánchez remains doubtful after missing training with a pelvic issue
  • Offensive options have been severely limited in recent matches

Previous impact and Almeyda’s plans

The Nigerian duo were instrumental in Sevilla’s last victory against Oviedo, with Adams scoring and providing an assist, while Ejuke also found the net.

Almeyda confirmed their potential involvement against Elche, stating: “We’ll have to see how they are first, we haven’t seen them yet. But I know I’ll be able to count on them during the match.”

The manager suggested they might not start but could provide much-needed attacking options from the bench - something Sevilla have sorely lacked in recent fixtures.
