Barca slam door shut on Bernal exit as Flick digs in heels
Despite Girona interest and limited playing time, Marc Bernal will remain at Barcelona as Hansi Flick refuses to sanction January departure following Dro exit.
Barcelona’s young midfielder Marc Bernal will remain at the club despite swirling transfer rumours, with Hansi Flick putting his foot down on any potential January exit.
Girona interest comes to nothing
With just over ten days remaining in the winter transfer window, Girona had expressed genuine interest in acquiring Bernal’s services. However, that move now appears dead in the water as Flick is adamant about keeping his squad intact, especially following the recent departure of Dro.
The German gaffer made his intentions crystal clear by starting Bernal in last Thursday’s Copa del Rey clash against Racing Santander - a proper statement of intent if ever I’ve seen one.
Limited minutes sparked exit thoughts
It’s no secret that Bernal hasn’t been getting the game time he’d hoped for this season, which naturally led to thoughts of seeking pastures new. The club has been treading carefully with the youngster following his return from a serious injury, with nobody at Barça willing to risk a setback.
The competition in midfield hasn’t done him any favours either, with:
- Pedri
- Eric
- De Jong
- Casadó
All ahead of him in the pecking order at various points.
Flick’s changing stance
While Bernal considered a loan move beneficial for his development, Flick has other ideas. In recent weeks, the coach has gradually increased the midfielder’s minutes and appears unwilling to let any players leave before season’s end - with the exception of Ter Stegen, who has requested a move.
Gavi factor
Gavi’s imminent return from injury might have theoretically made Bernal more expendable, given they operate in similar positions. However, Barcelona are being extremely cautious with Gavi’s reintegration after he suffered two consecutive serious knee problems.
The club’s medical staff will introduce him back gradually, with no fixed timeline for his full return to action. This uncertainty means Flick isn’t about to let Bernal walk out the door when he might be needed down the stretch.
With increasing minutes coming his way and the manager’s trust becoming evident, Bernal himself won’t be forcing a move either. Looks like this particular transfer saga is well and truly brown bread.
