Chimy Ávila's agent flirts with Boca move but prefers summer exit
The Betis forward's representative Carlos Bilicich has hinted at a potential return to Argentina, though he believes his client should stay put until June.
Chimy Ávila could be on his way back to Argentina with Boca Juniors interested, though his agent believes a summer move makes more sense than a January transfer.
Agent opens door to Boca
The Betis striker’s name has been floating around the rumour mill as potential January business for the Seville club. With Manuel Pellegrini’s side looking to free up some wage space for reinforcements, Ávila had initially been earmarked as possible deadwood to shift.
Getafe showed concrete interest in the Argentine forward but ultimately backed away due to the financial demands. However, the landscape has shifted dramatically in recent weeks - Chimy’s Copa del Rey brace against Elche and solid showing against Villarreal have seen him leapfrog Bakambu in Pellegrini’s pecking order.
Despite this upturn in fortunes, his agent Carlos Bilicich has been chatting to TyC Sports about a potential homecoming to Argentina - specifically with Boca Juniors. And it seems a call from a certain club legend could make all the difference.
“A call from Juan Román Riquelme could awaken his desire to play for Boca,” Bilicich teased.
Summer move preferred
While the Boca door remains ajar, Bilicich made it crystal clear that his professional advice is for Chimy to stay put at Betis until at least the summer:
- Ávila is “recovering his level” at Betis
- He feels “very comfortable” with the club
- The fans “treat him very well”
- A January move would be premature
“For me, this isn’t the market in which he should move,” Bilicich explained, suggesting June would be a more appropriate time for any transfer.
Contract situation
The 29-year-old remains under contract with Betis until June 2027, giving the club plenty of leverage in any negotiations. While Racing and Rosario Central have also been mentioned as potential destinations, Bilicich will meet with his client to discuss all options.
The recent injury to ‘Cucho’ Hernández has further strengthened Chimy’s position at Betis, though his agent acknowledges the unpredictable nature of the transfer window: “Until the end of the transfer window, anything can happen.”
One thing’s for certain - if Chimy does leave the Benito Villamarín, he’ll want to do so on good terms with both club and supporters. After his recent performances, those bread and butters in the stands might be hoping he sticks around a bit longer.
