Escudero exits Ceuta with thanks but no playing time under Romero

Andy Escudero, key figure in Ceuta's promotion to LaLiga Hypermotion, departs with manager's gratitude but minimal minutes this season as he heads to Hércules.

Ceuta have officially confirmed the departure of promotion hero Andy Escudero, who’s been frozen out of José Juan Romero’s plans despite his crucial role in the club’s historic rise to LaLiga Hypermotion.

From Hero to Zero

The Alicante-born midfielder was absolutely crucial in Ceuta’s promotion campaign last season, making 38 appearances and bagging 7 goals as the North African enclave club secured their spot in Spain’s second tier for the first time.

However, this season has been a proper nightmare for the lad. Despite his previous contributions, Escudero has been limited to just 216 minutes across all competitions - a mere cameo role compared to his starring performance last term.

Limited Opportunities

Escudero’s appearances this season have been few and far between:

  • Started in the opening fixture against Real Valladolid
  • Played roughly 10 minutes against Eibar in matchday eight
  • Featured in both Copa del Rey matches (against Atlético La Unión and Guadalajara)

Manager’s Admission

Romero had already let the cat out of the bag last week before the Valladolid match, acknowledging his failure to give Escudero the minutes his talent deserved.

“I believe I haven’t been able to give him what he deserved this year,” the Sevillian manager admitted, while expressing gratitude for Escudero’s contributions to the club.

Family Connection at New Club

Escudero won’t be on the bread line for long, with his next destination already sorted. He’ll be joining Hércules in Primera Federación (Spain’s third tier), following in the footsteps of his father who previously played for the Alicante-based club.

For Ceuta fans, it’s a bittersweet goodbye to a player who helped deliver one of the most significant achievements in the club’s history, only to find himself surplus to requirements in the division he helped them reach.
