Madrid hold minute's silence for Córdoba train tragedy victims

Real Madrid's players and coaching staff paid their respects to the 39 victims of Sunday's devastating train accident in Adamuz before their Champions League training session.

Los Blancos show solidarity with those affected by Sunday’s tragic rail disaster ahead of Monaco clash

Real Madrid’s squad and coaching staff took a moment before their Champions League preparations to honour the victims of the devastating train accident that occurred in Adamuz, Córdoba on Sunday.

Paying respects

Before beginning their final training session ahead of Tuesday’s European encounter with Monaco, the Madrid contingent gathered in a circle at the centre of the training pitch to observe a minute’s silence. Youth team coach Álvaro Arbeloa led the technical staff in the solemn tribute.

The gesture followed an official statement released by the club late Sunday, expressing “condolences, affection and solidarity to the families and loved ones” of those who lost their lives in the railway disaster.

Tragic accident details

The incident has sent shockwaves through Spain, with the death toll standing at 39 according to investigation sources. A further 73 people remain hospitalised, with 24 in serious condition.

The accident occurred when the final three carriages of a train travelling from Málaga to Madrid derailed and veered onto adjacent tracks, where they collided with another train heading to Huelva.

Football community united

Madrid’s tribute reflects the wider response from Spain’s sporting community, with many clubs and organisations expressing their sympathies following one of the country’s worst rail disasters in recent memory.

The team will now turn their attention to their Champions League fixture, but this morning’s gesture demonstrates how some things remain far more important than the beautiful game, even for a club preparing for a crucial European tie.
