Matarazzo reveals Real Sociedad's survival blueprint against Barcelona

La Real's boss discusses how his side combined defensive resilience, a touch of luck, and clinical finishing to overcome Barcelona at Reale Arena

Real Sociedad manager Pellegrino Matarazzo acknowledged the blend of luck, defensive discipline, and clinical finishing that powered his side to victory against Barcelona.

Concentration was key

The American-Italian gaffer was chuffed with his squad’s mental fortitude throughout the full 90 at the Reale Arena. “We’ve been concentrated for the entire match and our behaviour was fantastic,” Matarazzo explained in his post-match assessment.

The boss made no bones about the defensive approach being necessary against a side of Barcelona’s quality. He knows that against the big boys, you’ve got to dig deep and weather the storm.

“To win against Barça, you need to defend and sometimes suffer,” was the essence of his tactical philosophy for the night.

Lady Luck was smiling

Barcelona hit the woodwork a staggering five times during the match – the sort of statistic that would have most managers pulling their barnet out. When asked about this stroke of fortune:

“Maybe we had luck today, although having a great goalkeeper isn’t luck,” Matarazzo admitted with refreshing honesty. “But against Osasuna we didn’t have it, and today we were effective while the other day we weren’t.”

Remiro the hero

Speaking of top goalkeepers, Álex Remiro put in a proper shift between the sticks. The Spanish stopper was in inspired form, making several crucial saves to deny the Catalan visitors.

Matarazzo was full of praise for his number one: “I see how Remiro trains every day. He’s a great goalkeeper, I knew he could deliver this kind of performance.”

The manager’s delight extended beyond just the result: “I’m very happy with the results and with the faith and heart of this team.”

Tactical flexibility

La Real’s approach wasn’t just about parking the bus, though some periods called for a more conservative stance:

  • High pressing when possible
  • Compact low block when necessary
  • Bravery in possession

“If we can, we like to press high, if not we must do it in a low block,” Matarazzo explained. “We knew there would be phases like that, but our idea in all matches is to play with courage, and we did that.”

No comment on officiating

While Barcelona’s Hansi Flick reportedly focused his post-match comments on the referee, Matarazzo took the high road when asked about the officiating decisions.

“To be honest, I don’t want to comment on the referee,” he stated diplomatically. “I haven’t seen the incidents closely enough to make a valid judgment.”

In a concerning development for La Real fans, the manager also mentioned that Take Kubo might have suffered a significant muscle injury during the match.
