San Sebastián mayor invites Real Sociedad to kick off city festivities after Barcelona triumph
The Txuri-urdin squad have been invited to the midnight flag-raising ceremony to begin San Sebastián Day celebrations following their impressive victory over Barça.
Real Sociedad’s victory over Barcelona has added extra sparkle to San Sebastián’s annual city celebrations, with the mayor personally inviting the triumphant squad to join tonight’s festivities.
Nothing gets the Basque coastal city buzzing quite like La Real putting one over on the big boys, and Sunday’s result at Anoeta has certainly put the locals in proper party mood ahead of tomorrow’s San Sebastián Day celebrations.
Mayor’s personal invitation
Jon Insausti, the mayor of San Sebastián, was so chuffed with the result that he headed straight down to the dressing room after the final whistle to personally invite the players to tonight’s midnight flag-raising ceremony. Talk about getting the VIP treatment!
The ceremony marks the official start of the city’s big day, and having the Real Sociedad players in attendance will make it an absolute bobby dazzler of an occasion for the locals.
Change of plans
Interestingly, the original plan was to invite the squad to the flag-lowering ceremony, but the team’s training schedule forced a change of arrangements. Football comes first, even during fiesta time!
A special connection
The connection between the club and city runs deep, with one of the most emotional moments of the celebrations being when the city’s drum bands (tamborradas) play the Real Sociedad anthem.
It’s moments like these that remind you that in Spanish football, particularly in the Basque Country, clubs aren’t just sporting institutions – they’re the beating heart of local identity and culture.
For the Real Sociedad faithful, celebrating their victory over Barcelona while kicking off the city’s biggest annual celebration is about as sweet as it gets. The players might need to watch themselves though – after putting Barça to the sword, they’ll be treated like absolute royalty if they show their faces in town tonight!
