Valencia breathe easy as Tárrega avoids serious knee injury

Valencia CF defender César Tárrega expected to miss 2-3 weeks with minor knee sprain after injury scare during Getafe match

Valencia CF have received positive news regarding César Tárrega’s knee injury, with initial tests ruling out any serious damage. The central defender is expected to miss just 2-3 weeks with what appears to be a minor sprain.

Injury breakdown

Tárrega was forced off during Valencia’s match against Getafe after suffering a knee problem in the 26th minute. The incident occurred following a diving header clearance inside the penalty area, with the defender appearing to hurt his left knee during the landing motion.

Initially, the medical staff applied heavy strapping to the joint, and the Aldaia-born defender attempted to continue. However, he quickly realised it wasn’t possible and had to be substituted just moments after returning to the pitch.

Defensive headache

This latest setback adds to Valencia’s growing concerns in central defence:

  • Tárrega had already been managing discomfort in his right knee in recent weeks
  • He was rested against Celta Vigo and had been on a modified training schedule
  • Manager Carlos Corberán was forced to deploy midfielder Pepelu as an emergency centre-back following Tárrega’s exit
  • Eray Comert was named on the bench but unavailable for selection due to hip problems

Manager’s perspective

Speaking after the Getafe match, Corberán explained the situation: “He had swelling in one knee and, with a twist, felt discomfort in the other. We’ll wait to see how it evolves, but it’s not a pleasant situation.”

The gaffer later elaborated that Tárrega has been playing through pain since mid-December following the Copa del Rey match against Sporting Gijón.

Valencia are expected to release an official medical report on Monday, but the early diagnosis will have them feeling like they’ve dodged a right old bullet. With their defensive options already thin on the ground, losing Tárrega for months would’ve been a proper nightmare.
