Córdoba's right-back crisis forces urgent transfer hunt
Injury-ravaged Córdoba CF desperately seeking defensive reinforcements after Carlos Isaac's departure to Poland leaves them with just two fit defenders for their trip to Las Palmas.
Córdoba CF facing defensive nightmare with just two fit defenders available as they scramble to find right-back reinforcements in the January window.
Defensive crisis deepens
Talk about being caught short at the back! Córdoba’s transfer plans have gone right Pete Tong after a perfect storm of defensive departures and injuries has left manager Iván Ania with a proper headache.
The Segunda División outfit initially planned to focus on attacking reinforcements this January, looking to replace the outgoing Obolskii and determine Jan Salas’ future. However, these plans have been dramatically shelved due to an unexpected defensive emergency.
The situation reached critical levels when right-back Carlos Isaac triggered his €1 million release clause to join Polish Ekstraklasa side Widzew Lodz. This departure couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Andalusian club, who are already stretched paper-thin at the back.
Injury nightmare
The defensive crisis has been exacerbated by a brutal run of injuries:
- Álex Martín suffered a muscle injury against Málaga
- Alberto del Moral took a rib blow (still awaiting official diagnosis)
- Fomeyem is sidelined with bone edema and ankle ligament problems
- Alcedo picked up a muscle injury in Huesca
- Vilarrasa has been out since October with a pubic injury
This leaves Albarrán (right-back) and Xavi Sintes (centre-back) as the only fully fit defenders in the squad. There’s some hope that Rubén Alves might return, but he wasn’t training with the group last week and the medical staff are being extra cautious with his recovery.
Transfer targets
Córdoba are now frantically working to bring in a right-back immediately, not just to restore depth but to have enough options for their challenging trip to Las Palmas.
The club appears to be working through a list of targets, quickly moving on if deals can’t be completed swiftly. Names in the frame include:
- Trilli (currently without minutes at Valladolid)
- Pablo Busto (Real Betis Deportivo)
- Michelin (Racing) - who’s also reportedly on Leganés’ radar
The big question for Córdoba’s recruitment team is whether to rush in a player who might need to be thrown straight into action, or take more time to find the right fit - potentially risking fielding a makeshift defence in upcoming matches.
