Elche's European Dream: The 84th Minute Curse Costing Them Glory
Analysis of how Elche would be sitting in a European spot if matches ended after 84 minutes, with late goals costing the promoted side 9 crucial points this season.
The newly-promoted side are punching well above their weight this season, but late collapses have robbed them of an even more remarkable campaign.
The 84th Minute Nightmare
If football matches ended after 84 minutes, Elche would be sitting pretty in a European qualification spot. That’s not me having a bubble bath - it’s cold, hard facts.
The franjiverdes have dropped a whopping 10 points from goals conceded in the dying moments of matches this season. With only one late equaliser scored themselves, that’s a net loss of 9 points in the final minutes - points that would have them in sixth place on 33 points and dreaming of Continental away days next season.
For a club with the third-lowest salary cap in the division, that’s proper madness. They’re currently eighth with 24 points - respectable, but miles from what could have been.
Recent Heartbreak
The last fortnight has been particularly brutal for Eder Sarabia’s men:
- Against Sevilla, they led 2-0 until the 74th minute before Akor Adams completed his brace in the 92nd minute to snatch a 2-2 draw
- At Valencia, they were minutes away from their first away win before Pepelu converted an 87th-minute penalty
Both matches featured late penalties for handball - the sort that leave you screaming at your telly.
A Season-Long Pattern
This isn’t a new problem. In November, they suffered back-to-back home disappointments:
- Oyarzabal’s 89th-minute penalty earned Real Sociedad a 1-1 draw
- Bellingham’s 87th-minute equaliser secured a point for Real Madrid in a controversial 2-2 draw
Even in the season opener at the Sánchez-Pizjuán, Peque robbed them of victory with an 85th-minute leveller for Sevilla.
Their sole late salvation came at Osasuna in September, when Adrià Pedrosa grabbed a 92nd-minute equaliser.
With little time to dwell on these missed opportunities, Elche will be looking to secure their first win of 2026 when they visit Levante this Friday at 21:00.
