Jordán looking for Sevilla exit as high wages complicate departure
The Catalan midfielder, one of Sevilla's highest earners, is seeking a move away after barely featuring this season following his return from injury.
Sevilla midfielder Joan Jordán is pushing for the exit door at the Nervión club, with negotiations already underway for his departure despite having 18 months left on his contract.
Return cut short
The 31-year-old Catalan returned to Sevilla last summer with renewed optimism after a productive loan spell at Alavés. He even started pre-season early, training in Valencia alongside Barcelona’s Ferran Torres, desperate to fight for his place in the squad.
However, his plans went proper Pete Tong when a lingering disc herniation from January 2025 required surgery, sidelining him until September and postponing what seemed an inevitable departure.
Current situation
According to journalist Basilio García in ElDesmarque, Jordán now wants out and has already begun negotiating his exit. With his contract running until 2027, Sevilla are considering two options:
- A loan deal where another club covers part of his salary
- A low-cost permanent transfer
The second option appears more challenging, though Jordán reportedly prefers to remain in Spanish football and wants a stable sporting project.
Wage problem
The major stumbling block to Jordán’s exit is his hefty salary. He’s currently among the five highest-paid players at Sevilla following his 2022 contract renewal. Last summer, unlike teammates Marcao, Djibril Sow and Adnan Januzaj, Jordán refused to adjust his wages to help the club financially – a stance he shared with Tanguy Nianzou.
Should he depart, his exit would free up significant salary cap space, potentially allowing sporting director Antonio Cordón to bring in reinforcements during the January window.
Limited playing time
Jordán has barely had a sniff this season, making him the first-team player with the fewest minutes (excluding Álvaro Fernández, who has already left the club). After 582 days away, he finally reappeared in a Sevilla shirt in early December during a Copa del Rey tie against Extremadura.
In total, he’s featured in just four matches across all competitions, with minimal La Liga action. At 31, his current market value according to Transfermarkt sits at a modest €2 million.
