Madrid's Monaco mauling could've been one for the history books

Los Blancos took their foot off the gas at 5-0, but their Champions League demolition job should have been even more emphatic

Real Madrid delivered a masterclass but bizarrely eased off when victory was already secured, missing the chance to register a truly historic scoreline.

Foot off the gas

When Vinicius slotted home Madrid’s fifth, the Bernabéu was buzzing for more. The crowd sensed blood and wanted their team to deliver one of those legendary European nights that get talked about for decades. Instead, Carlo’s men inexplicably took their foot off the accelerator.

The relaxed approach that followed was more suited to a pre-season friendly than a Champions League clash. Madrid were absolutely cruising, playing some gorgeous football that had Monaco chasing shadows. But rather than going for the jugular, they seemed content with five.

Goals matter in the new format

This strange mercy shown to Monaco wasn’t just a missed opportunity for a cricket score - it could have proper consequences. In this new Champions League format, goal difference might be absolutely crucial when determining final standings.

Even worse, Madrid’s casualness actually gifted Monaco a consolation goal. Schoolboy stuff, that. You simply can’t be dishing out free goals at this level like they’re sweets at Christmas.

As any proper football man will tell you, when you’ve got your opponent on the ropes, that’s precisely when you should be turning the screw. No quarter given. The old saying goes you don’t give your enemy water - Madrid practically offered Monaco a full tea service!

Missed opportunity

When you’ve got a team as talented as this Madrid side, these chances to create something truly memorable don’t come along every week. The performance for 70-odd minutes was absolutely top drawer - creative, clinical and commanding.

The way Vinicius, Bellingham and company were linking up had Monaco absolutely bamboozled. The visitors looked like they’d rather be anywhere else than facing this white storm.

For Madrid fans, there’ll be mixed emotions. Pride at the five-star performance for most of the match, but a nagging feeling that this could’ve been one for the record books. Instead, it’ll go down as just another comfortable win rather than the absolute demolition job it threatened to become.
