Roberto Gómez slams Vinicius boo-boys: 'One of the worst things in Bernabéu history'
Veteran Spanish journalist defends Vinicius Jr after sustained whistles, while calling for patience with under-fire Castilla coach Álvaro Arbeloa.
Madrid pundit Roberto Gómez has gone in two-footed on fans who whistled Vinicius Jr, branding the treatment of the Brazilian as “one of the worst things” to ever happen at the Bernabéu.
‘Mentally tough’ Vini
Speaking on La Tribu de Radio MARCA, the veteran journalist was absolutely livid about the sustained booing directed at Vinicius during Real Madrid’s recent home match. He didn’t mince his words when discussing the incident:
- Called the 90-minute whistling campaign “shameful” and “inadmissible”
- Praised Vinicius for having the mental strength to endure such treatment
- Rejected the notion that brief whistling at the start of matches should be normalized
- Appreciated Mbappé’s solidarity in suggesting if fans must whistle, they should target the entire team
Gómez was having none of the excuses, comparing those who attend matches just to whistle players to someone who’d go to a concert purely to boo the performers. Proper barmy behaviour, that.
Arbeloa deserves time
The journalist also came out swinging in defense of Álvaro Arbeloa, who’s faced serious criticism despite barely getting his feet under the table at Real Madrid Castilla:
- Expressed disbelief that Arbeloa is “already sentenced” after just two press conferences
- Called for patience with the former defender’s coaching journey
- Praised Arbeloa’s communication skills and clarity of message
Champions League the real test
Gómez reckons the bread and butter of Madrid’s season is only just beginning, suggesting the Champions League – not “minor competitions” – will be the true measure of the club’s success this campaign.
He even downplayed the historical importance of the Copa del Rey for Los Blancos, making it crystal clear where his priorities lie. Talk about putting your cards on the table!
