The One That Got Away: Frankfurt's Spanish-Moroccan Gem LaLiga Failed to Capture

Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab is making waves in the Bundesliga after Eintracht Frankfurt snapped him up for just €200,000, leaving Spanish clubs ruing a missed opportunity.

A 21-year-old talent with dual Spanish-Moroccan nationality is causing quite the stir in Germany after a blistering start to his Bundesliga career, leaving several LaLiga clubs kicking themselves for missing out on his signature.

Frankfurt’s Bargain Buy

Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab has become the revelation of early 2026 in the Bundesliga, needing just 20 minutes of playing time to make his mark. The youngster from Vic, Catalonia scored on his Eintracht Frankfurt debut against Stuttgart on January 13th, before providing a crucial 94th-minute assist to Knauff in his second appearance against Werder Bremen.

What’s particularly remarkable is that Frankfurt secured his services for a mere €200,000 in the winter transfer window, tying him down until 2031. Talk about getting something for a song!

A Unique Background

Amaimouni-Echghouyab’s journey to the Bundesliga is as fascinating as his on-pitch performances:

  • Speaks five languages (Spanish, English, Catalan, German and Berber)
  • Holds dual Spanish-Moroccan nationality
  • Had the chance to join Barcelona’s La Masia academy at age 10
  • Moved to Germany when his father emigrated for work
  • Prioritised education over football at 18, declining international offers

The Path Less Travelled

Unlike many wonderkids who progress through elite academies, Amaimouni-Echghouyab’s development took a more unconventional route. He bounced between several German clubs including TuS Eving-Lindenhorst, Rot-Weiss Essen, and Arminia Bielefeld before joining Hoffenheim’s reserve team in 2024.

At Hoffenheim II, he contributed seven goals and nine assists in 28 matches last season, helping them secure promotion. This season, he continued his impressive form with nine goals and six assists in 18 games before Frankfurt came calling.

LaLiga’s Missed Opportunity

Both Real Betis and Villarreal had shown serious interest in bringing the winger back to Spain, with his contract at Hoffenheim set to expire in June. However, they hesitated while Frankfurt pounced decisively, despite competition from Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen.

The early signs suggest he could be the bargain of the season. Despite limited playing time, his impact has been immense – averaging 2.96 shots per 90 minutes and 7.5 touches in the opposition box, all while contributing defensively.

For a player who models his game on wingers like Lamine Yamal, Riyad Mahrez and Arjen Robben, the Premier League might eventually come calling. For now, though, Frankfurt are rubbing their hands together while LaLiga clubs are left to wonder what might have been.
