From injury hell to Bernabéu glory: Mesonero's remarkable 18-month journey
After spending 15 months sidelined with a cruciate ligament injury, Real Madrid's academy talent Dani Mesonero made his first-team debut against Monaco in the Champions League.
The ultimate tale of perseverance as Dani ‘Meso’ Mesonero completes his journey from devastating injury to Champions League debut at the Santiago Bernabéu under Álvaro Arbeloa’s guidance.
From one tunnel to another
It’s taken precisely 18 months for Mesonero to travel from the metaphorical tunnel of injury despair to the literal tunnel of the Bernabéu dressing rooms. The young midfielder’s career hit a devastating roadblock on July 24, 2024, when he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture during Castilla training. Fast forward to January 20, 2026, and there he was, walking out in a Real Madrid shirt with the number 47 on his back against Monaco in Europe’s premier competition.
Mesonero has become the third La Fábrica product to debut under Arbeloa’s first-team reign, following in the footsteps of Manuel Ángel and César Palacios. But his path was arguably the toughest of all.
The forgotten injury victim
When three Real Madrid academy talents suffered cruciate ligament tears in the summer of 2024, Mesonero was the first to fall but perhaps received the least attention:
- July 24, 2024: Mesonero injured in Castilla training
- July 31, 2024: César Palacios injured during Madrid’s US tour
- August 9, 2024: Joan Martínez injured in first-team training
While devastating for all three lads, Mesonero drew the short straw in recovery time. Not only did he miss the entire 2024-25 season, but additional knee surgery last summer further delayed his comeback, leaving him in the treatment room for a total of 15 agonising months.
Arbeloa’s unwavering faith
If there’s a silver lining to Mesonero’s nightmare, it’s Álvaro Arbeloa’s promotion to Castilla coach. The gaffer, who has long been Mesonero’s biggest advocate, kept close tabs on his recovery and didn’t think twice about reintegrating him once fit.
On October 25, 2025 – 15 months after that fateful injury – Arbeloa handed Mesonero his first minutes back with Castilla. By the next match against Southampton in the Premier League International Cup, he was already in the starting XI.
After 14 appearances with Castilla and nine with Madrid C, Mesonero’s persistence was rewarded with the ultimate prize – a Champions League debut at the Bernabéu.
La Fábrica’s high hopes
Mesonero joined Real Madrid’s youth setup from Rayo Vallecano in 2019, working his way through the ranks. During the 2023-24 season, he primarily played under Arbeloa in the Juvenil A team before making his Madrid C debut late in that campaign.
Raúl had earmarked him for Castilla in the 2024 preseason before injury struck, halting the progress of a player La Fábrica has significant hopes for. Now back to full fitness, the best of Mesonero is yet to come.
“It’s a dream. Every young player dreams of debuting with the first team,” Mesonero remarked after the match, no doubt feeling like he’d won the bread and honey after his long road back.
