Leganés end Dani Rodríguez transfer saga with winter swoop

Former Mallorca midfielder Dani Rodríguez joins struggling Leganés until June with option for another season after being a free agent since December.

After weeks of speculation, Leganés have finally landed their man as former Mallorca midfielder Dani Rodríguez prepares to put pen to paper in the coming hours.

Free agent finds new home

The Galician midfielder has been without a club since mutually terminating his contract with Mallorca back in December, sparking interest from several Spanish sides including Rayo Vallecano, Getafe, and Levante.

However, it’s the cucumber growers who’ve won the race for his signature, with Rodríguez agreeing terms on a deal until June with an option for another season. Not exactly a shock move this, as Leganés’ football director Andrés Pardo has been in constant contact with the player’s camp since his Mallorca exit.

Attacking boost for struggling side

This could be a proper bit of business for Leganés, who are currently hovering just two points above the relegation zone in 15th place in Spain’s Segunda División.

Rodríguez brings some much-needed attacking quality to Igor Oca’s side. Last season in La Liga, he was Mallorca’s most productive attacking player, netting seven goals and providing four assists - numbers that would make any Segunda side’s Adam’s apple wobble with excitement.

The versatile midfielder, who can operate either on the wing or as a number 10, becomes Leganés’ first winter signing as they look to pull away from the drop zone.

More transfer activity expected

While landing Rodríguez represents a solid start to their January business, the club’s transfer activity is far from over. Manager Igor Oca has overseen improvements since taking charge, but defensive shortages and a lack of firepower up front remain significant handicaps.

Reports suggest Leganés are also targeting:

  • Álex Fores from Real Oviedo
  • Clement Michelín from Racing Santander

For a side that was expected to be one of the busier clubs this transfer window, the cucumber growers will hope Rodríguez is just the start of their reinforcements as they battle to secure their Segunda División status.
