Almería pin hopes on Bonini return to plug leaky defence

Italian centre-back Federico Bonini set for early comeback from hamstring injury as Almería look to fix their defensive woes ahead of tough Eibar clash

The return of Federico Bonini couldn’t come soon enough for an Almería side that’s been shipping goals like they’re going out of fashion since the Italian defender’s injury.

Defensive crisis

Almería fans have had to watch their team concede a whopping two goals in each of their last five matches - a proper defensive mare that’s seen them slide down the form table. The numbers tell a grim story:

  • 32 goals conceded this season (fifth-worst in Segunda División)
  • Only 3 goals conceded in 7 matches before Bonini’s injury
  • 10 goals leaked in 5 matches since he’s been out

It’s no wonder gaffer Rubi is buzzing to get his Italian rock back in the heart of defence. The former Catanzaro man has been missing since December 6th when he did his hamstring against Andorra, forcing him off before half-time.

Earlier than expected

The club initially reckoned Bonini would be sidelined for 6-8 weeks, but the centre-half has made a swift recovery, returning to group training earlier this week. He’s been mixing regular sessions with specific recovery work, and there’s even chat he might start against Eibar on Sunday despite his lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Perfect timing

Bonini’s return couldn’t be better timed for Almería, who’ve been absolutely desperate at the back. The injury crisis has been brutal, with Chumi and Pedro Fidel also missing, while Aridane remains unavailable.

The defensive problems run deeper than just conceding goals - they’re allowing far too many shots on target. Goalkeeper Andrés Fernández has been forced into more saves than almost any other keeper in LaLiga Hypermotion this season, poor bloke.

Tough test ahead

With only two wins from their last seven matches, Almería desperately need to stop the rot. However, a trip to Ipurua to face Eibar represents a proper banana skin for Rubi’s men.

The question now is whether Bonini’s return alone can plug the holes in what’s been a defence as solid as a chocolate teapot in recent weeks.
