Antal Yaakobishvili's Andorra loan cut short as Hungarian defender heads to Tenerife
The Hungarian centre-back returns to parent club Girona before being immediately loaned out to Primera RFEF leaders Tenerife after struggling for minutes at Andorra.
Antal Yaakobishvili’s brief and largely forgettable spell with Andorra has come to an abrupt end, with the Hungarian defender now swapping the Pyrenees for the Canary Islands.
Brief Andorra Stint
The Girona-owned centre-back has had his loan deal terminated after making just five appearances for the Segunda División outfit. Andorra confirmed the departure which had been telegraphed by Carles Manso before the club’s match against Mirandés.
Yaakobishvili’s Andorra career makes for some proper thin reading:
- Debut came on matchday three against Burgos - a measly three-minute cameo
- First start at Eibar’s Ipurua stadium, subbed off after 54 minutes in Andorra’s first league defeat
- Managed just four minutes in a draw against Granada
- Only completed 90 minutes twice - both in Copa del Rey fixtures against Valle de Egüés and Cultural Leonesa
Family Connection
Interestingly, Antal is the older brother of Áron Yaakobishvili, who remains at Andorra as a goalkeeper on loan from Barcelona. The sibling connection wasn’t enough to cement Antal’s place in the squad, however.
Tenerife Bound
After returning to parent club Girona, the Budapest-born defender hasn’t hung about in Catalonia. He’s been shipped straight back out on loan to Tenerife, who are currently top of the Primera RFEF Group I table and pushing hard for promotion to the Segunda División.
Squad Space
Yaakobishvili’s departure from Gerard Piqué’s club was on the cards for a while, with Andorra needing to free up squad registration space for winter reinforcement Edgar González. The Hungarian’s minimal contribution made him an obvious candidate for the chop.
For Tenerife, they’ll be hoping the defender can find his feet and contribute to their promotion push. For Yaakobishvili himself, it’s a chance to finally get some proper minutes under his belt after what’s been a right old waste of six months in Andorra.
