CSKA Moscow's bid for Kike Salas knocked back by cash-strapped Sevilla

The Russian giants have made a formal offer for Sevilla's promising young defender, but Los Nervionenses aren't willing to part with their academy product on the cheap.

Despite financial pressures forcing Sevilla to consider player sales, the Andalusian club has rejected CSKA Moscow’s opening bid for promising defender Kike Salas.

Russian Interest Rebuffed

Sevilla find themselves in a proper pickle this January - desperate for transfer funds but equally determined not to flog their crown jewels for peanuts. The latest development sees Russian outfit CSKA Moscow testing the waters with a formal offer for 22-year-old centre-back Kike Salas, which Sevilla have promptly shown the door.

The exact figures are a bit of a moving feast depending on who you ask:

  • Sources close to the player suggest the offer was around €8 million including variables
  • Sevilla claim the bid was closer to €5 million - below his €6 million Transfermarkt valuation

Either way, it wasn’t enough to tempt the Andalusians into parting with one of their most promising La Cantera graduates, especially after they turned down nearly double that amount for Juanlu Sánchez last summer.

From Bench-Warmer to Linchpin

What makes this rejection even more telling is Salas’ dramatic change in status at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. After barely getting a sniff earlier in the season, the Morón de la Frontera native has become absolutely crucial to Matías Almeyda’s plans due to a perfect storm of defensive crises:

  • Marcao’s six-match suspension
  • César Azpilicueta’s recurring injury problems
  • Tanguy Nianzou’s fitness woes

Salas has grabbed his opportunity with both hands, showcasing impressive aerial dominance and consistency that could potentially boost his market value back toward the €10 million mark it reached 18 months ago.

Holding Firm Despite Financial Pressure

Sevilla’s Sporting Director Antonio Cordón recently made their position crystal clear: “We don’t want to sell and devalue ourselves. We need to find a balance and improve.”

While the club desperately needs to balance the books before bringing in reinforcements, they’re not prepared to accept lowball offers that would further weaken the squad without significantly improving their financial situation.

Unless CSKA substantially improve their offer, Salas won’t be swapping Seville for Moscow this January. The Russians will need to dig deeper into their pockets if they’re serious about landing this promising Spanish defender.
