Fermín López: Barça's Unlikely Champions League Goal Machine
The young Spanish midfielder is now Barcelona's top scorer in the Champions League this season, surpassing expectations and proving crucial to Flick's European campaign.
Barcelona’s homegrown talent Fermín López is having a proper purple patch in Europe, establishing himself as the club’s unexpected Champions League goal king.
Pichichi in Europe
Fermín López is absolutely on fire in European competition. After his brilliant brace against Slavia Prague yesterday, the young Spanish midfielder has claimed an unlikely title - Barcelona’s top scorer in this season’s Champions League campaign.
With five goals to his name in the competition, López has surpassed Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford (four goals) in the overall Champions League scoring charts. Not bad company for a lad who wasn’t even guaranteed a starting spot at the beginning of the season.
The Andalusian midfielder was instrumental in Barça’s victory in Prague, which puts them in a strong position to qualify directly for the next round if they can beat Copenhagen next week. Finishing in the top eight is now well within reach for Flick’s men.
Hitting a Rich Vein of Form
López is enjoying a particularly sweet moment in his career, especially when it comes to his offensive contributions. His current numbers are proper Bobby Dazzler:
- 10 goals across all competitions this season
- 10 assists to go with those goals
- Direct involvement in 20 goals overall
His shooting accuracy, quality on the ball, and confidence make him a genuine threat every time he steps onto the pitch. Starting in the attacking midfield position against Slavia, he tested keeper Stanek early on and remained one of Barça’s most dangerous players throughout.
Flick’s Faith
Hansi Flick seems delighted with the midfielder’s contributions. After the match, the German manager highlighted how important it was that López didn’t leave for Chelsea, saying: “It was a good thing that Fermín didn’t go to Chelsea. It’s important for Barcelona that he stayed.”
Lewandowski Off the Mark
While López grabbed the headlines, Robert Lewandowski finally opened his Champions League account for the season. The Polish striker had gone five European matches without finding the net before finally breaking his duck against Slavia.
“I’m very happy,” Lewandowski said after ending his European goal drought.
Dani Olmo also got on the scoresheet with a cracking effort from outside the box after replacing the injured Pedri, who was forced off with what appeared to be a hamstring problem - potentially the Canary Islander’s third injury setback this season.
