Luengo set for Burgos switch as Michu seals the deal
Real Oviedo defender Oier Luengo is on the verge of joining Burgos CF on loan after limited playing time this season, with former Premier League star Michu instrumental in the transfer.
Oviedo centre-back looking for fresh start after falling out of favour at Carlos Tartiere, with Burgos beating off competition from Cádiz and Huesca for his signature.
Michu masterminds the move
Oier Luengo is on the brink of swapping the blue of Real Oviedo for Burgos CF in a loan deal orchestrated by none other than former Swansea City star Michu. The Basque defender has found himself warming the bench more often than not this season, making just three appearances for the Asturian outfit.
Michu’s intervention proved decisive in Burgos winning the race for Luengo’s signature, with both Cádiz and Huesca left disappointed. The deal is expected to be finalised imminently, with Chilean midfielder Pablo Galdames also heading to El Plantío after terminating his contract with Independiente.
From hero to zero
It’s been a proper rollercoaster for Luengo at Oviedo since his arrival in 2022 following Amorebieta’s relegation. After a slow start, he eventually established himself as a key figure in the squad, with the 2023-24 campaign marking his breakthrough season.
The defender became a fan favourite at the Carlos Tartiere, with the Oviedo faithful taking to his competitive spirit and commitment. But this term has been a different kettle of fish entirely, with Luengo finding himself surplus to requirements.
Career reset
Despite having a contract that runs until 2027, Luengo has opted to seek playing time elsewhere. This isn’t the first time he’s considered an exit – there were attempts to arrange a move last summer, but he ultimately decided to stay put.
The stats tell their own story:
- 92 official appearances for Oviedo
- 5 goals
- 3 assists
- Just 3 appearances this season
For Oviedo supporters, this feels more like “see you later” than “goodbye”, with many hoping the defender will don the blue shirt again in the future. For now though, it’s off to Burgos for a fresh start under Luis Miguel Ramis.
