Mascarell weighing up shock January exit from Mallorca

The Tenerife-born midfielder is considering a lucrative offer from outside Europe after feeling disappointed by Mallorca's approach to his contract renewal.

Frustrated with Mallorca’s lack of urgency in offering him a new deal, Omar Mascarell could be on his way out of Son Moix this January despite being a crucial cog in Jagoba Arrasate’s midfield machinery.

Contract situation turning sour

Mascarell’s current deal expires on June 30th, meaning he’s been free to negotiate with other clubs since the beginning of January. The 32-year-old midfielder had initially planned to prioritize Mallorca in any contract discussions, but the club’s apparent indifference has left him feeling both disappointed and undervalued.

While the Balearic outfit continues to focus their transfer efforts on securing a winger, they’ve seemingly taken their eye off the ball regarding one of their most consistent performers.

Tempting offer from abroad

The situation has now reached a critical point with Mascarell receiving what sources describe as an “almost irrefusable” financial package from a club outside Europe. The offer would reportedly:

  • Triple his current Mallorca salary
  • Provide medium-term security with a multi-year contract
  • Include a transfer fee payable to Mallorca this January

This last point is particularly interesting as the unnamed club is willing to pay for Mascarell’s services now rather than waiting five months to sign him on a free transfer.

No bridges burned

Despite his disappointment, Mascarell isn’t looking to cause a dust-up on his way out. The midfielder, who arrived at Mallorca for just over €500,000, wants to leave with his head held high if a departure materializes.

He’s made no secret about his happiness on the island, feeling valued by the fans and important to the team’s project under Arrasate. However, at 32, this could be his last chance at a significant payday before hanging up his boots.

The ball’s now in Mallorca’s court - they could either match the offer and keep their midfield general, or cash in on a player they’d lose for nothing in the summer. Proper Bobby Dazzler of a dilemma for the Mallorca board, that.

With the transfer window closing soon, we’ll have to wait and see whether Mascarell stays put or embarks on what would be a surprising new chapter outside European football.
