Oviedo's double vision: Thiago Fernández for now, Pablo Sáenz for later

Real Oviedo's winter transfer strategy shows ambition on two fronts - addressing immediate survival needs while planning ahead with smart free transfer business.

Amidst their relegation battle, Real Oviedo are playing a canny game of chess, making moves for both the present scrap and tomorrow’s war with a dual transfer strategy that shows proper foresight from the club’s brass.

Thiago to the rescue

The blue-and-whites have welcomed their third winter reinforcement in Argentine winger Thiago Fernández, who arrives on loan from Villarreal. The youngster touched down in Asturias on Monday, representing a direct punt from owner Jesús Martínez to add some much-needed cutting edge to an attack that’s been crying out for width and penetration.

Fernández’s arrival wasn’t straightforward. After the club’s pursuit of Hirving Lozano hit the buffers, they shifted focus to a younger talent with potential to make an impact. The Argentine has just signed for Villarreal but hasn’t seen competitive action for over a year following a serious knee injury and a complicated end to his time at Vélez Sarsfield.

The good relationship between Oviedo and the “Yellow Submarine” facilitated this strategic loan move. The plan is for Thiago to integrate immediately into the squad dynamics and contribute as soon as possible to their survival push.

Future planning with Pablo

While they’re putting out fires in the present, Oviedo aren’t neglecting what’s on the horizon. The club has secured Pablo Sáenz for next season - a proper bit of business, that. The 24-year-old winger, whose contract with Granada expires on June 30th, has agreed to don the blue shirt from July 1st, with official confirmation pending.

Sáenz brings solid experience from Spain’s national categories after developing at Calahorra and Alfaro before making the jump to Granada’s reserve team. His CV includes:

  • 35 appearances and 3 goals in Primera RFEF during the 2023-24 season
  • First-team debut in La Liga
  • 5 goals while splitting time between Granada and Albacete in Segunda last term
  • 16 matches and over 460 minutes in the current campaign

By securing Sáenz on a free transfer, Oviedo adds a player with Segunda experience and growth potential without knowing whether they’ll be competing in Primera or Segunda next season.

This balancing act between immediate survival and future planning is a risky strategy, especially when supporters are crying out for reinforcements to keep their survival dreams alive. But the club’s determination to “survive today without mortgaging tomorrow” shows admirable long-term thinking in the dog-eat-dog world of Spanish football.
