Pelayo Fernández set for Cádiz exit as loan spell fizzles out

The Asturian centre-back's time at the Andalusian club looks to be ending prematurely, with both parties seeking an early termination of his loan from Rayo Vallecano.

Pelayo Fernández’s disappointing stint at Cádiz is drawing to a close, with the Asturian defender preparing to cut short his loan spell in the January window.

Loan spell gone wrong

The centre-back, who arrived on loan from Rayo Vallecano with high hopes, has failed to cement his place in Cádiz’s LaLiga Hypermotion campaign. According to Radio MARCA Cádiz, both the club and player have reached an agreement to seek an early termination of the loan arrangement, potentially within hours.

Fernández’s time at the Nuevo Mirandilla has been largely forgettable, characterized by:

  • Just five appearances in total
  • Lack of trust from manager Gaizka Garitano
  • Being overtaken in the pecking order by Jorge Moreno and Iker Recio
  • A particularly costly error against Almería that damaged his standing with supporters

Following Kovacevic’s injury, rather than stepping up, Fernández found himself further marginalized as other defenders were preferred by the coaching staff.

Third time’s a charm?

Interestingly, despite having already represented two clubs this season, Spanish football regulations would allow Pelayo to join a third team. The RFEF rules on player registration make this move entirely viable, similar to precedents like Efe Aghama.

This regulatory flexibility benefits all parties - Cádiz frees up a squad spot they weren’t utilizing, while the player gets a chance to resurrect what has been a stalled season under Garitano’s management.

For a player who arrived with decent credentials, it’s been a proper nightmare in Andalusia. Sometimes in football, as we say in London, it’s just not your cup of tea at certain clubs. Pelayo will be hoping it’s a case of third time lucky if he secures another move this January.
