Valencia's Guido Rodríguez pursuit hits the buffers as West Ham play hardball
Valencia CF's hopes of signing Argentine midfielder Guido Rodríguez from West Ham are cooling rapidly due to financial hurdles and the Hammers' reluctance to sell.
What seemed like a promising deal at the start of the week has quickly turned into a right old mess for Valencia. Their pursuit of West Ham’s Guido Rodríguez is stalling as financial and sporting obstacles mount up.
Deal on the rocks
The 31-year-old Argentine midfielder remains Valencia’s top target, but negotiations with West Ham have hit a wall. The cautious optimism from earlier this week has completely evaporated, leaving Los Che in a tricky situation.
While Rodríguez himself is keen on a return to La Liga to secure more playing time ahead of the 2026 World Cup, several factors are complicating matters:
- West Ham boss Nuno Espírito Santo (former Valencia manager) won’t sanction the player’s departure without finding a replacement first
- Despite limited minutes this season, Rodríguez has featured in West Ham’s last two matches, including their crucial victory over Tottenham
- The Hammers are only interested in a permanent transfer, not a loan, as the player’s contract runs until 2026
- Valencia are struggling to make the financials work within their fair play restrictions
Competition heating up
Valencia aren’t the only club interested in the former Betis man. Brazilian side Gremio reportedly tabled an offer around €3 million, while MLS outfit Atlanta United, managed by Argentine coach Tata Martino, are also in the hunt.
Cautious approach
Valencia’s sporting directors are approaching the situation with more caution than urgency, particularly after summer signings like Santamaría and Ramazani failed to make the desired impact.
While the club hasn’t completely abandoned hope—they recall how the seemingly impossible Umar Sadiq deal eventually came through in December—any breakthrough would require approval from Singapore (owner Peter Lim) to improve their offer and present an attractive salary package.
Plan B activating
With the Rodríguez deal cooling faster than a pint in winter, Valencia are already exploring alternatives. One name on their radar is Aliou Dieng, a 28-year-old Malian defensive midfielder currently at Egyptian side Al Ahly.
Dieng fits the physical profile Valencia are after, though there are concerns about how quickly he could adapt to La Liga and deliver the immediate impact manager Corberán desires. Fresh from Africa Cup of Nations duty with Mali, Dieng is currently focused on Al Ahly’s African Champions League fixture against Tanzania’s Young Africans.
