Corberán draws line between coaching and transfers: 'Impossible to be both manager and head coach'

Valencia boss Carlos Corberán discusses his role in transfer dealings, confirms a centre-back signing is 'very advanced', and prepares for Espanyol's set-piece threat.

Valencia boss Carlos Corberán has clarified his role in the club’s transfer operations while confirming a new centre-back signing is imminent ahead of this weekend’s clash with Espanyol.

Transfer dealings and club structure

The gaffer was crystal clear about the division of responsibilities at Valencia, particularly when it comes to the January window. Speaking at his pre-match presser, Corberán explained the modern reality of Spanish football management.

“I’m completely apart from negotiations and player searches, because it’s impossible to think that a coach can also be a manager,” he stated, drawing a firm line between his tactical responsibilities and transfer dealings.

Despite not being directly involved in negotiations, Corberán revealed there’s an “advanced operation” for a centre-back – widely believed to be Unai Núñez, though he didn’t mention him by name. The need for defensive reinforcement has become more pressing following Diakhaby’s injury.

Collaborative approach

Corberán was keen to emphasise the strong alignment between himself and the sporting directors:

“I perceive a maximum level of alignment. Take the centre-back issue: we all knew it was necessary and wanted it done earlier. But timing doesn’t always match our needs.”

When asked if the honeymoon period with the club was continuing, he quipped: “This isn’t about love – love is with my wife. This is professional. But when you see people suffering and celebrating with you, it means we’re all heading in the same direction.”

Espanyol challenge

Turning to on-field matters, Corberán highlighted the set-piece threat posed by Espanyol:

“They have players who strike the ball very well and a centre-back who is a reference in these actions. It will be a challenge for us, but I believe the team has taken a step forward in defensive set-pieces.”

Valencia will be looking to build on their victory at Getafe and give the Mestalla faithful something to cheer about after a run of home games without a win.

Transfer priorities

The Valencia boss outlined his preference for versatile defenders who can play on both sides of central defence, particularly after losing Diakhaby’s flexibility. While confirming that a second signing is also in the works, he remained focused on getting the best from his current squad.

“Right now we have one free spot and we’ll have to see which position demands it. The options that appear are unpredictable,” he added, keeping his cards close to his chest about further reinforcements.
