Dani Rodríguez: The 'Betanzos Tiger' ready to roar for Leganés
Former Mallorca midfielder Dani Rodríguez joins Leganés with childlike enthusiasm, promising goals and bringing his famous 'tiger' mentality to Butarque.
Leganés have secured the services of the self-styled ‘Tiger of Betanzos’, with Dani Rodríguez expressing the excitement of a kid on Christmas morning about his move to Butarque after leaving Mallorca.
Fresh start at Butarque
The experienced midfielder was officially unveiled alongside Leganés’ football director Andrés Pardo, and he couldn’t hide his enthusiasm about getting back on the pitch after a frustrating period.
“I’m feeling brilliant. I’ve been training professionally for three weeks on my own,” Rodríguez explained, confirming he’s available for selection against Real Sociedad B if the gaffer fancies giving him a run-out.
After spending time in limbo, the move to Leganés happened at proper lightning speed. Several clubs were sniffing around, but the ‘Pepineros’ showed the most faith in his abilities, making the decision a doddle for the midfielder.
The Tiger’s tale
That curious ‘Tiger of Betanzos’ nickname? Turns out it came from a viral joke video during his Mallorca days, but Rodríguez admits it captures his character rather well. He’s clearly not one to shy away from getting stuck in.
Interestingly, he’s been handed the number 9 shirt – unusual territory for a midfielder – but he’s taking it in his stride and hopes to contribute with goals and assists to help his new club.
Championship ambitions
Despite Leganés currently finding themselves in a bit of bother in the table, Rodríguez believes there’s plenty of time to turn things around with 20 fixtures remaining.
“I’ve been told that at Leganés, dreams come true,” he shared with genuine passion. “We need to work hard and get excited about thinking bigger. I’m coming with the mentality to help create excitement and think about great things.”
The midfielder has already had positive conversations with manager Igor Oca about tactical systems and what will be expected of him, with early signs suggesting he’s settling in nicely at Butarque.
For a player with his vast experience across multiple divisions, Rodríguez could be just what the doctor ordered for a Leganés side looking to climb the table in the second half of the season.
