Font throws down the gauntlet: 'These elections are Laporta vs Barça'
Presidential hopeful Víctor Font launches scathing attack on Joan Laporta's leadership, promising to restore Barça's values and reconnect with the fanbase.
Victor Font has come out swinging just 24 hours after Barcelona’s presidential elections were announced, framing the March vote as a stark choice between the old guard and a fresh start for the Catalan giants.
Font wastes no time
The leader of the ‘Nosaltres’ campaign wasted no time assembling key members of his team, including Carles Ordiales (president of Seguiment FCB), Gemma Amat (daughter of La Masia co-founder Jaume Amat), and Jaume Guardiola (former president of the club’s economic commission).
Font didn’t mince his words when discussing the current state of affairs at Camp Nou, describing the upcoming elections as “the most important in history” while painting a picture of a club in crisis despite recent positive results on the pitch.
Economic disaster
Font and his team delivered a brutal assessment of Barcelona’s financial situation:
- Guardiola claimed the current board has overseen €213 million in losses despite €800 million in ‘palancas’ (economic levers)
- Questioned the handling of the Spotify Camp Nou renovation project
- Suggested over €50 million in “unjustified commissions” has been paid
- Implied these financial missteps have directly impacted transfer capabilities
“If we hadn’t paid more than 50 million in commissions, what capacity would we have had to strengthen the team?” Guardiola asked, highlighting how financial mismanagement has hampered sporting ambitions.
Social disconnect
The Font campaign also highlighted what they see as a growing disconnect between the club and its members:
- Season ticket holders at the Olympic Stadium feel disrespected
- Uncertainty around seating arrangements when returning to Camp Nou
- The Animation Stand (ultras section) has been neglected until election time
- Lack of transparency in decision-making
Messi, Flick and promises
Font made several clear promises about his immediate priorities if elected:
- “The first thing I’ll do is call Messi” - promising to outline a three-dimensional plan for the club legend’s return
- Confirmed Hansi Flick would remain as manager with “better support”
- Acknowledged Xavi Hernández feels “deceived” and doesn’t want to return
The choice ahead
Font framed the election as a referendum between two visions: Laporta’s personalistic, 1980s approach versus a more modern, member-focused model.
“Barcelona is too important to depend on just one person,” Font declared, positioning himself as the candidate of transparency and collective leadership against what he characterizes as Laporta’s one-man show.
With the election set for March 15th, the battle lines have been drawn in what promises to be a proper ding-dong for the soul of FC Barcelona.
