Huesca bolster attacking options with Álex Cantero signing

SD Huesca secure their third January signing with Álex Cantero joining from Polish side Jagiellonia as the struggling Segunda División side aim to avoid relegation.

SD Huesca continue their January recruitment drive with the addition of versatile forward Álex Cantero as they battle to avoid the drop to Primera RFEF.

Third attacking reinforcement

Huesca have been busy little beavers in the transfer market this month, with Cantero becoming their third attacking signing following the arrivals of Efe Aghama and Jordi Escobar. The Madrid-born forward joins on a free transfer from Polish outfit Jagiellonia, putting pen to paper on a deal running until 2027.

It’s clear as day where Huesca’s problems lie this season - they’ve been about as threatening up front as a sleeping kitten. The club’s official statement describes Cantero as “an attacker who can operate in any offensive position and stands out for his speed, dribbling and associative ability.”

Spanish football pedigree

Cantero’s no stranger to the Spanish football pyramid, bringing valuable experience to the Aragonese side:

  • 29 appearances in La Liga
  • Over 80 matches in Segunda División
  • Made his top-flight debut with Levante in late 2020-21
  • Played 27 games for Levante’s first team the following season
  • Represented Levante for two seasons in Segunda (76 matches)
  • Spent last season at CD Tenerife

Defensive reinforcements next on the agenda

With the attack now looking sorted, Huesca are shifting their focus to shoring up their backline and midfield. Jair Amador is expected to be the next arrival through the door at El Alcoraz.

Meanwhile, captain Jorge Pulido’s future remains up in the air. Almería are pushing hard to secure his signature this January rather than waiting until his contract expires in June. Bit of a headache for Huesca that one - losing your skipper mid-season when you’re fighting for survival ain’t exactly what the doctor ordered.
