Matarazzo keeping it real: 'We'll only sign players who improve us, not just to make up numbers'
Real Sociedad boss Pellegrino Matarazzo talks transfer strategy with January window closing, hints at Mikel Goti loan move, and emphasizes club's youth-first philosophy.
Real Sociedad manager Pellegrino Matarazzo has made it crystal clear that La Real won’t be diving into the January sales just for the sake of it, insisting any winter additions must genuinely strengthen the squad.
Quality over quantity
With the transfer window slamming shut in just 10 days, Matarazzo’s stance reflects the pragmatic approach at the Basque club. The gaffer’s not having any of that panic-buying malarkey that often plagues clubs during the mid-season window.
“I’m fully aware of how difficult winter signings can be,” the American-born coach explained, emphasizing that Real Sociedad’s philosophy remains firmly rooted in promoting talent from their famed Zubieta academy before looking elsewhere.
Matarazzo revealed he’s in regular communication with sporting director Erik Braal about potential moves, but stressed: “We’ll only do something if we’re clear it will improve the team.”
Youth development remains priority
The Real Sociedad way has long been about nurturing homegrown talent, and Matarazzo seems right on board with this approach:
- Academy graduates continue to be first port of call
- Any transfers must add genuine quality, not just depth
- Decision-making focused on long-term improvement
Goti loan on the cards
While not explicitly confirming it, Matarazzo strongly hinted that young talent Mikel Goti could be heading out on loan.
“Sometimes it makes sense for players to leave to get minutes elsewhere and return stronger,” he noted, adding that clear communication with players about their development path remains crucial.
Striker situation remains open
Despite Jon Karrikaburu seemingly out of favour and questions about Andri Óskarsson’s physical readiness, Matarazzo remained tight-lipped about targeting a new forward specifically.
Keeping his cards close to his chest, the boss suggested they have options that might surprise people: “We have possibilities that many people might not be thinking about, so stay calm. I’m relaxed, and if we need to make decisions, we will.”
With the clock ticking down on the January window, La Real fans will be watching closely to see if any new faces arrive at Anoeta – but only if they’re proper Bobby Dazzlers, mind you, not just making up the numbers.
