Polish legend Tomaszewski delivers brutal ultimatum to Flick: 'Win Champions League or get sacked'
Former Poland goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski has launched a scathing attack on Barcelona boss Hansi Flick, claiming his methods are physically draining the squad.
Barcelona’s impressive start under Hansi Flick hasn’t impressed everyone, with Polish goalkeeping legend Jan Tomaszewski delivering a proper roasting of the German gaffer’s methods and setting an extremely high bar for success.
‘Players at half capacity’
Speaking to Polish channel Super Express, the former international shot-stopper didn’t mince his words about Flick’s impact at the Catalan giants, suggesting the manager is running his squad into the ground:
- Claims Barça players are operating at “40-50% of their potential”
- Points to nine injuries that weren’t from direct challenges but physical exhaustion
- Criticizes Flick’s handling of the dressing room
- References the poor performance against Sparta Prague as evidence
Champions League ultimatum
Tomaszewski went for the jugular with his assessment of what Flick needs to achieve to justify his methods, essentially setting up a Champions League-or-bust scenario for the former Bayern boss.
The Polish legend believes Flick simply “doesn’t fit” with Barcelona and has transformed world-class players into half the footballers they should be - despite having what Tomaszewski describes as a “magnificent team” at his disposal.
Lewandowski’s changing role
Interestingly, Tomaszewski also weighed in on his compatriot Robert Lewandowski’s future at the club:
- Sees Lewy transitioning from key player to impact substitute
- Describes him as “perfect” for a super-sub role scoring winning goals
- Defends Lewandowski as “the best player in Polish football history”
- Notes his only failure has been not replicating club success with Poland
While Barça currently sit pretty at the top of La Liga, Tomaszewski’s comments highlight the sky-high expectations at Camp Nou. Winning the domestic title might not be enough to satisfy some critics - it’s the Champions League or nothing for this Barcelona team, apparently. Bit of a tall order for Flick’s first season, if you ask me!
