Real Madrid's winter gift: Roberto Martín returns after three-month injury layoff

The talented 19-year-old midfielder is set to rejoin Real Madrid C this weekend, delighting coaches across four youth teams who've all utilized his skills.

Madrid’s youth setup receives a timely January boost as one of their most promising talents returns to action after a frustrating spell on the sidelines.

The comeback kid

Roberto Martín, the gifted 19-year-old midfielder who had coaches at every level of Real Madrid’s youth structure purring earlier this season, is finally fit again after a three-month injury absence. The youngster is set to return to the matchday squad for Real Madrid C against Intercity this Sunday, beginning what the club hopes will be a gradual reintegration to competitive football.

Martín’s return will be music to the ears of no fewer than four different coaches at La Fábrica:

  • Álvaro Arbeloa (Castilla)
  • Julián López de Lerma (former Juvenil A coach)
  • Víctor Cea (Real Madrid C)
  • Álvaro López

Before his injury setback in October, Martín had established himself as something of a golden boy within the Valdebebas complex, impressing at multiple levels of the club’s structure.

Rising through the ranks

Though officially registered with Real Madrid C, Martín’s talent saw him quickly elevated to Castilla’s squad during pre-season under Arbeloa’s watchful eye. The midfielder didn’t just make up the numbers either – he rapidly became a key component in Arbeloa’s plans.

Even more impressive was catching the attention of then-first team boss Xabi Alonso, who invited him to train with the senior squad on several occasions. The pinnacle came when Xabi handed Martín his unofficial first-team debut alongside Thiago Pitarch in the August friendly against Tirol.

Before his injury, he’d become what the Spanish might call a ‘cuatro en uno’ – a four-in-one utility player serving multiple teams within the club’s structure. Proper handy, as we’d say in London.

The injury blow

Disaster struck on October 19th when Martín sustained a serious muscular injury involving tendon damage during Castilla’s match against Ourense. The timing couldn’t have been worse, halting his momentum just as his stock was rising rapidly.

Interestingly, his recovery timeline was extended slightly following teammate Rachad’s recent relapse from a similar injury. The medical team took the cautious approach with Martín, extending his rehabilitation period to ensure a complete recovery. That patience has now paid dividends with the all-clear finally given.

For Real Madrid’s youth setup, getting Martín back feels like landing a top January signing without spending a penny. Lovely jubbly.
