Real Sociedad's Mikel Goti ships off to Córdoba on loan deal for rest of season

The promising midfielder heads to LaLiga Hypermotion side Córdoba after limited minutes under Matarazzo, despite impressive Copa del Rey performances.

Young talent struggling for minutes at Anoeta makes temporary switch to secure playing time and help Córdoba’s promotion push.

Limited opportunities despite Copa heroics

Mikel Goti has packed his bags for Córdoba in LaLiga Hypermotion, joining on loan for the remainder of the campaign after finding himself even further down the pecking order under new Real Sociedad gaffer Pellegrino Matarazzo than he was with previous boss Sergio Francisco. Bit of a shame that, especially considering the lad has bagged a couple of crucial goals during his Copa del Rey appearances this season.

The Gorliz-born midfielder had put pen to paper on a contract extension with La Real last April, committing his future to the club until 2028. At that point, he was absolutely bossing it as the standout performer for Real Sociedad B (Sanse), who secured promotion to Segunda División a couple of months later.

Despite his success with the B team, Goti’s path to first-team minutes has been proper blocked, innit? With established talents like Brais Méndez, Luka Sucic, and Arsen Zakharyan all competing for similar positions, the writing was on the wall regarding his playing time prospects.

The numbers don’t lie

The stats tell the story of Goti’s limited role this season:

  • Just 254 total minutes for Real Sociedad’s first team
  • 180 minutes came in Copa del Rey ties against Negreira and Reus (scoring in both)
  • Mere 74 minutes of action in La Liga

Fresh start in Andalusia

Córdoba currently sit 10th in the LaLiga Hypermotion table and will be hoping Goti can provide the creative spark to push them towards the promotion playoff places. For the player himself, this represents a chance to get regular football under his belt and showcase the talents that earned him that long-term contract with his parent club.

The move makes sense for all parties – Goti gets minutes, Córdoba gets quality, and Real Sociedad gets their promising talent developing rather than warming the bench. Sometimes you’ve gotta take one step back to take two forward, as they say down the Old Kent Road.
