Tiago Pinto: The Premier League's New Midas Touch Without the Magic

From Benfica fan to Bournemouth's transfer wizard, Tiago Pinto has quietly become one of football's most effective operators while insisting he's just 'a normal person'.

The man behind Bournemouth’s remarkable £160m transfer profit this season insists there’s no sorcery at work - “I don’t do magic, I’m a very normal person.”

From Benfica fan to boardroom

Tiago Pinto’s journey to becoming one of football’s shrewdest operators began in the most unlikely fashion - as a passionate Benfica supporter who had the bottle to stand up at a club assembly and give the president both barrels about how to fix things. Six months later, he was employed by the club.

After winning 50 titles as Director General across Benfica’s various sports departments, he became their youngest-ever Sporting Director at just 32. The pressure was immense: “When we won, I didn’t feel happiness, just relief,” he admits.

By 2021, he needed a new challenge and headed to Roma, where his golden touch continued:

  • Player sales worth €160 million
  • Free transfers for Dybala, Matic and N’Dicka
  • Roma’s first continental trophy in 61 years

His stint with Mourinho in Rome proved fruitful, and Pinto speaks warmly of The Special One’s return to Benfica: “The biggest club for the biggest manager.”

The Bournemouth blueprint

Despite offers from bigger clubs, Pinto chose Bournemouth in 2024, drawn by owner Bill Foley and the Premier League’s allure. Now serving as President of Football Operations, he’s created a transfer masterclass that’s the envy of Europe.

The Cherries have posted a staggering +£160m transfer balance this season alone, selling players to the last four Champions League winners (PSG, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Man City).

But Pinto is keen to spread the credit for this success:

  1. Bill Foley - “Very intelligent and ambitious”
  2. Club structure - “Great professionals at recruitment level”
  3. Andoni Iraola - “Perhaps the most important component”

The Iraola factor

Pinto’s admiration for Bournemouth’s Spanish manager borders on reverence. “It’s impossible to explain Bournemouth’s success without talking about Iraola,” he insists.

With Iraola’s contract ending in June, securing his future is Pinto’s priority: “It worries me more than losing an important player. It’s very difficult to find someone like him.”

The development of players like Huijsen, Zabarnyi and Kerkez under Iraola’s guidance has been central to Bournemouth’s success story and subsequent profit-making.

Beyond the money machine

Despite the eye-watering profits from selling Antoine Semenyo (£72m to City), Dominic Solanke, and others, Pinto is cautious about Bournemouth being seen purely as a selling club.

“I don’t want players thinking they can play 20 good games and leave,” he explains. “We want them to leave something extra and help the team win Premier League games.”

The future looks bright, with Pinto suggesting: “In the coming years, we won’t have to sell as much. The idea is to achieve stability in the Premier League that allows us to dream a little.”

With his track record at Benfica and Roma before his Bournemouth masterclass, it’s no wonder Spanish clubs might be eyeing Pinto for their own operations. The man himself admits he’d be happy working in La Liga someday.

Just don’t call it magic - he’s adamant he’s just a normal bloke doing his job. The results suggest otherwise.
