Valencia secure Unai Núñez loan deal to bolster defensive options

Los Che move quickly to address defensive crisis with Basque centre-back arriving from Hellas Verona until the end of the season

Valencia have finally got their man after pursuing Unai Núñez for several transfer windows, with the Basque defender joining on loan until the end of the season in a complex three-way negotiation.

Defensive crisis forces Valencia’s hand

It’s been a proper mare at the back for Valencia recently. The devastating injury to Mouctar Diakhaby left a gaping hole in Carlos Corberán’s defence, with the manager forced into some creative reshuffling just to field a back line. With Tárrega also sidelined for the next few weeks, Los Che were desperate for reinforcements.

Núñez, 28, arrives from a rather complicated situation. Technically still a Celta Vigo player, he’s been on loan at Hellas Verona in Italy, where he’s made 18 appearances this season and clocked around 1,300 minutes in Serie A.

Three-club negotiation

The deal required agreement from multiple parties:

  • Celta Vigo - The player’s parent club who had to approve the loan termination
  • Hellas Verona - Currently bottom of Serie A, who had to be willing to end their loan arrangement
  • Valencia - Who’ve been monitoring Núñez since at least 2022

What helped grease the wheels was Núñez’s own desire to return to La Liga. According to sources close to the negotiations, the defender was keen on a move back to Spain, which proved crucial in getting all parties to the table.

Perfect profile

Corberán has been after a specific type of centre-half - someone with experience, match fitness, and the ability to slot in immediately. Núñez ticks all those boxes.

The hope at Mestalla is that the former Athletic Club academy graduate can hit the ground running and be available for selection almost immediately as Valencia navigate a crucial period in their season.

This represents smart business from Valencia, addressing an urgent need without breaking the bank. For a club that’s had its fair share of transfer disappointments in recent years, landing a player they’ve been after for multiple windows feels like a right result.
