Zaragoza land Rober González in winter window boost
Real Zaragoza secure their first January signing with Rober González joining on loan from NEC Nijmegen, bringing Segunda División experience after previous spells with Racing Santander.
Zaragoza have finally made their first move in the January transfer window, securing the loan signing of winger Rober González from Dutch outfit NEC Nijmegen until the end of the season.
Career Journeyman Returns to Spain
The 25-year-old Extremadura native is no stranger to Spanish football, having developed through Real Betis’ youth academy before embarking on a series of loan spells across LaLiga and Segunda División clubs.
González returns to Spanish football after spending last season on loan at Racing Santander, where he continued his knack for reaching the promotion playoffs - his third such campaign with different clubs.
Impressive Track Record
The talented wide man brings a decent goal threat to La Romareda, with his most productive season coming at Las Palmas in 2020-21 where he notched:
- 8 goals
- 3 assists
- 30 appearances
This impressive form earned him a second loan spell with the Canary Islanders in 2022-23, helping them reach the promotion playoffs.
Promotion Pedigree
Zaragoza fans will be hoping González can bring his promotion expertise to their campaign. The winger was part of the Alavés squad that secured top-flight football via the playoffs in 2022-23, making significant contributions during the crucial final stretch of the season.
After signing permanently with NEC Nijmegen, González enjoyed a fruitful 2023-24 campaign in the Netherlands, contributing 6 goals and 4 assists before returning to Spain with Racing Santander last term.
Squad Reshuffling
González’s arrival appears to signal the imminent departure of Pau Sans, who is reportedly close to leaving the club. This transfer represents a shrewd bit of business from Zaragoza, bringing in a player with promotion experience at this level to bolster their attacking options.
Zaragoza supporters will be hoping this is just the first of several January additions as the club looks to climb the table in the second half of the season. Not a bad bit of business for the lads from La Romareda, if you ask me.
