Puga pens long-term deal as Málaga's rebuilding project gains momentum

Carlos Puga commits his future to Málaga CF until 2029, becoming a cornerstone of the club's ambitious plans after their return to LaLiga Hypermotion.

Carlos Puga has put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him at La Rosaleda until 2029, cementing his status as a key figure in Málaga’s promising project.

From winter signing to cornerstone

The timing of the announcement couldn’t be more symbolic. The club chose to reveal the contract extension during their post-match dressing room celebrations, with Puga proudly holding up a shirt displaying his name and the 2029 end date.

It’s been quite the journey for the Granada-born defender, who arrived at Málaga during the 2023/24 winter transfer window from Atlético Madrid’s reserve team. He joined at a crucial moment with the club pushing hard for promotion, and immediately made his mark with solid defensive performances and attacking thrust down the right flank.

Rapid rise through the ranks

Puga’s development at Málaga has been nothing short of impressive:

  • In 2024/25, he established himself as a regular, making 31 league appearances plus a Copa del Rey outing, racking up 2,245 minutes
  • His consistency, intensity and ability to contribute offensively without neglecting defensive duties earned him the complete trust of the coaching staff
  • This season (2025/26), he’s become an undisputed starter, with his pace and competitive spirit making him one of the team’s most reliable performers

Building for the future

This extension represents a significant statement of intent from Málaga. After successfully returning to LaLiga Hypermotion, they’re clearly focused on stability and building a sustainable project with players who embody the club’s values.

Puga perfectly fits that bill - young, reaching competitive maturity, and fully identified with the Blanquiazul cause. His commitment and consistent performances make him exactly the sort of player the club wants to build around for the medium term.

The defender had previously hinted at his desire to stay, telling MARCA: “If I have to move house, I hope it’s nearby.”

With this deal, Málaga have secured a proper Bobby Dazzler for their right flank as they look to establish themselves back in professional football after their recent troubles. Shrewd business, that.
